Alleging that they might turn out to be a security threat to womenfolk at homes, objectionable comments against village volunteers by Telugu Desam Party president and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. He referred to an allegation of making sexual overtures to a woman resulting in her suicide.
The security of women was at peril with this village volunteer system, alleged Naidu. He asked, “Where is the security to womenfolk at home when village volunteers go to them in the name of delivery of goods?” But, in the village volunteers’ system, the factual situation is different. 1,30,718 members are women out of 2,48,608 village/ward volunteers.
Around 54 percent of the total number of village/ward volunteers are women. How can they prove the threat to the security of women at home when many women village volunteers are there in the system? Is the question being raised? This point of 54 percent of the village volunteers being women was neither highlighted by YSRCP members and nor by the government.
The ruling party leaders confined themselves to making unparliamentary comments against Naidu and the TDP leaders. Had they come out with statistics like this, they would have got more credibility in their attack on the TDP.
