Generally, we don't see star heroes making any strong political statements in their films. They try to keep their films in a low-toned narrative when it comes to politics. But Rajinikanth's 2018 film Kaala is high on its political tone and delivers a strong leftist message to the society. This Pa. Ranjith directorial film celebrates its two years release anniversary today. On this occasion, here is a look back into it.
Pa. Ranjith is one filmmaker who tries to showcase the oppression of Dalits and the caste politics that still exists in our society. He had collaborated with Rajini earlier for the 2016 film Kabali. Even in that film, he dealt with the concept of how Tamilian migrants get treated in Malaysia. In Kaala, Ranjith showcases the oppression of Tamil workers in Mumbai. Rajinikanth played the role of a Dalit leader who resides in Dharavi. How he unites his people to curb the power politics of a ruthless politician, forms the main crux of the film. Rajini always wears black colored clothes while the antagonist Nana Patekar always wear white-colored clothes in the film. The director had given such little elements to show the irony of our society.
Eeshwari Rao, Huma Qureshi and Anjali Patil have played the other important roles in the movie. The music of the film got composed by Santosh Narayanan. Kaala opened to mixed responses when it had hit the theaters. But eventually, it went to become a successful venture at the box office.
