PI Muhammed Kutty, a college boy from Chembi in Kottayam district, made his film debut on August 6, 50 years ago. Sethumadhavan was making a film based on Thakazhi’s Anubhavangal Paalichakal.
Fifty years later, that college boy is now one of the pillars of Malayalam cinema. Fifty years of acting career has passed for the Malayalees’ own Mammookka.
The movie Anubhavangal Paalichakal was released on August 6, 1971. Mammootty acted in a scene with Bahadur in the film. Mammootty, who initially appeared in insignificant roles, first delivered his dialogue in the 1973 film Kaalachakram.
Mammootty’s first film in a lead role was Devalokam. The Malayalam film was written, scripted, and directed by M T Vasudevan Nair. But the shooting of this film could not be complete.
Although he qualified as a lawyer, Mammootty entered the acting industry after working as a lawyer in Manjeri for two years. Mammootty initially acted in the film under the name Sajin. Later, in 1980, Mammootty's career got a breakthrough with the film Mela directed by KG George.
Later, he became the Malayalam superstar with films of directors like PG Vishwambharan, IV Sasi, Joshi, and Sathyan Anthikkad.
He has won the National Award for Best Actor three times in his 50 years of acting. Apart from this, Mammootty has won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor five times and the Filmfare (South Indian) Award 12 times.
