PM Modi, Xi Jinping spend 'Quality Time' Yesterday, to talk trade, terror today
Chinese president Xi Jinping has begun two days of intensive talks with Indian prime minister Narendra Modi in a meeting likely to be dominated by trade as New Delhi seeks to reduce a huge trade deficit with China.
The attempt to reset the relationship between the world’s two most populous countries. The pair are still dealing with friction sparked by Beijing siding with India’s bitter rival Pakistan against New Delhi’s recent political re-organization of the volatile Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mr Modi was set to host Mr Xi for a tour of a temple complex at the site of an ancient port on India’s southern coast near Chennai, Tamil Nadu state — once the hub of vibrant sea trade between China and India.
The pair are expected to watch a cultural performance and hold one-on-one meetings over dinner on Friday evening and again on Saturday in what is the second summit between the two leaders since April last year.
“This informal summit is important to Xi and important to Modi,” says Rudra Chaudhuri, director of Carnegie India, a local arm of the US-based think-tank. “It’s about trying to find a kind of framework to work with China, and find the right balance between co-operation and competition.”
