Kaatrin Mozhi Tagline
Chirpy Jyothika is back with her evergreen expressions
Kaatrin Mozhi Story
Director Radha Mohan’s Kaatrin Mozhi is a Tamil remake of Hindi hit film Tumhari Sulu, which starred Vidya Balan. Featuring Jyothika in the lead role, the film’s script has been modified a little to suit Tamil audiences.
Vijaylakshmi (Jyothika) is a middle-class housewife who has failed her Class 12 exams. She is content with her life but there is always an urge to carve an identity for herself. She accidentally ends up at a radio station to collect a gift and comes to know that they’re looking for an RJ.
Vijayalakshmi becomes an RJ for a late-night talk show which causes mayhem in her otherwise settled life. How does she overcome the hurdles and convince the rest of her family is told in a humorous way.
Kaatrin Mozhi Performances
Jyothika as the bubbly Vijayalakshmi is a revelation on screen. Seeing her takes us back to the 90s and 2000s where she played similar roles and aced it.
Lakshmi Manchu as Maria is just perfect as a radio station head. Off-screen, she is known for being bold and it has reflected well in the film as well. She has played the role of an authoritative yet supportive studio head with ease.
Supporting performances from Vidharth, Kumaravel, Sandra Amy and MS Bhaskar is a delight to watch on screen. It makes us relive certain moments from our life.
Radha Mohan’s understanding of bringing real-life characters on screen has worked to his favour.
Kaatrin Mozhi Positives
Ever since Jyothika made a comeback with 36 Vayadhinile, she has been playing roles of her age barring Magalir Mattum. Kaatrin Mozhi is no different. She’s bubbly, chirpy yet has a mind of her own.
Radha Mohan didn’t butcher the story in the pretext of making it suitable for the Tamil audience. In fact, it is safe to say that Kaatrin Mozhi is a faithful remake to Vidya Balan-starrer Tumhari Sulu.
Vidharth as the doting husband fits his character like a glove. Particularly, in the scene where he shows his frustration towards Jo when he says that she’ll continue to work. He has got into the character and delivered it with ease.
Radha Mohan and Parthiepan’s dialogues are a beautiful addition to this lovely film. They reek of middle-class mindset and yet has humour laced in them.
Kaatrin Mozhi Negatives
In few places, Jyothika has overperformed which is kind of awkward to watch on screen. She has this face where she looks surprised for the most part of the film.
The climax of Kaatrin Mozhi became a lot more dramatic which could have been avoided.
When a director chooses to remake a successful film, comparisons are meant to crop up. In that case, Kaatrin Mozhi is close to what Tumhari Sulu is, but the wow factor seems to be missing. Maybe, for those who haven’t seen Tumhari Sulu, Kaatrin Mozhi might work.
The film’s runtime is 2 hours and 20 minutes. But, because of the dramatic climax, it looks a bit stretched.
Kaatrin Mozhi Verdict
Kaatrin Mozhi is enjoyable if you manage to keep Tumhari Sulu out of your mind.
