Synopsis

Three years ago, director Shankar and Lyca Productions announced that they will be churning out a sequel to the blockbuster hit film Endhiran. Later, the film was titled as 2.0 and was creating enough buzz during the filming. 2.0, as we all know, stars Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson in the lead roles. So far, SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 1 and 2 were regarded as India’s most expensive film. Little did the world know that 2.0 will dethrone Baahubali series and become India’s costliest film.

2.0 Story

Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar hits it out of the park with this solid entertainer

Filmmaker Shankar is reuniting with Superstar Rajinikanth for the sequel to their blockbuster venture Endhiran. Titled 2.0, the sci-fi film stars Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson in the lead roles.

As we saw the trailer, a grave danger is approaching the city as cell phones are being snatched away by a mysterious man who is half-crow and half-man called Pakshi Raja. The only way to combat this is to bring back dismantled Chitti.

Soon, Dr Vaseegaran realises that Chitti along cannot save the city, so he takes the help of Chitti Reloaded 2.0 robots and few other people.

What is the mysterious man trying to convey? Why is he taking revenge on the people? Will Chitti and 2.0 emerge victoriously? Watch the film to know the answers to these questions.

2.0 Performances

In 2.0, performances of the lead actors would make you feel satisfied. Everyone, including the supporting actors, has given their best. Even the littlest of things like the background props have been given much attention which makes the film extra special.

After a long time, we get to see Rajinikanth in multiple getups. The characters Dr Vaseegaran, Chitti and 2.0 are all played by Rajini himself and there are variations that we could notice in him while he comes on screen.

It is easy to say that 2.0 is easily one of Rajinikanth’s best performances.

During several interviews, Shankar and Rajinikanth stated that Akshay Kumar’s role is tough to pull off. And one could understand why they said so after watching his mind-boggling performance. No one has ever seen this side of Akshay and it is a welcoming change.

With 2.0, Akshay will get a heroic welcome in Kollywood and south cinema.

Amy Jackson as a fellow scientist has delivered her best. Shankar is probably the only director who has understood Amy’s acting capabilities and has used it well.

2.0 Positives

Even though Shankar’s films are larger-than-life in nature, they always have a core message. In 2.0, the social message about cell phone addiction is much needed in today’s world. Mobile phones have become like an extended arm for all us and the film shows the harmful effects of it.

Shankar has etched a good story for 2.0 and the film is gripping for most parts. The first half establishes the characters and story in a gradual manner. The second half packs some momentum and goes forward in full swing.

Apart from the performances, it is AR Rahman’s pulsating background score that has elevated the core sequences in the film such as the interval and climax sequence.

The VFX work in 2.0 is on par with international standards and it is picture perfect in every frame. One cannot point out and say that the visual effects are not perfect in any scene.

Watch out for the climax fight where giant Chitti takes on giant Crow man. This brilliantly-choreographed stunt sequence has several ‘wow’ moments that will take us all by surprise and awe.

Resul Pookutty’s work is impeccable as the ambience sound and minute sound effects he had used works well in 4D sound. He is a pioneer and with 2.0 he has set a new benchmark for other sound designers.

2.0 Negatives

Though the song of Endhira Logathu Sundariye is soothing to listen to, the picturisation is a let-down. It acts as a speed breaker and the song is lazily choreographed.

2.0 Verdict

2.0 is a marvellous attempt by Shankar and it definitely takes Tamil cinema to a higher level. Not just banking on spectacular VFX, Shankar has a solid story to tell and he has told in the most entertaining manner.
