Taapsee Pannu is extraordinary in Ashwin Saravanan’s thriller
Director Ashwin Saravanan’s Game Over starts from the word go. A girl in her 20s is killed in a brutal manner. Similar deaths follow in Chennai by a group. Meanwhile, Swapna (Taapsee Pannu) is a video game designer who has her own issues.
She has a traumatic past and is struggling to get back to normal. Taapsee is already dealing with a lot of issues and what will happen if the killer who is on the loose targets her?
Game Over takes a leaf out of Swapna’s life and presents it in the most engaging manner.
Taapsee Pannu has nourished into a seasoned actor and she slips into the role of Swapna quite easily and makes it convincing for the audience as well.
Time and again, actress Vinodhini proves that she is one of the best character artists in the business. As Kala Amma, she is natural and has a flair for acting like no one.
Sanchana Natrajan appears in a small role, but the kind of emotional impact she has on the story and the audience is brilliant.
Director Ashwin Saravanan has incorporated several genres in Game Over, but none of them seems out of place or forced.
Multiple storylines make up Game Over’s story, but they are coherent and very relevant to the story. Kudos to Ashwin and writer Kavya for coming up with a kickass script that gives a lot of thrill.
The entire film relies on Taapsee and Vinodhini and both of them have given their career-best performance with much ease.
The shaky effects on the camera add to the intensity of the film, which is a huge advantage to a thriller film like Game Over, which also haha a handful of jump scare moments.
Ron Yohan Ethan’s background music is yet another asset to Game Over. Though it is quite loud at times, it does the job quite well, especially the haunting sounds.
Pace wise, the first half moves at a slow pace and during the closure, many might expect a backstory for the reason behind the killings.
Game Over is a multi-layered film which deals with a lot of issues. There is something for a fan of any particular genre. Thriller and horror elements make the film an enjoyable watch. Game Over is a film that should be celebrated in theatres.
