When Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight hit theatres in 2008, it introduced the mainstream cinema going audience to Joker. A villian taken straight out of the DC comics who has no extraordinary powers but still manages to create chaos in the fictional city of Gotham. Joaquin Phoenix's recent rendition pays homage to Heath Ledger's Joker as it takes a new approach to the villainous character.
Just like Heath Ledger's performance, Phoenix seems to have become Joker himself in order to play the part. The film's story concerns itself with the transformation of an ordinary man into the Joker in an increasingly violent and cruel society. Eerily similar to the real world we live in, performances by Robert De Niro help elevate Phoenix's role within the film. The titular character, Joker, carries the film from start to end. Thanks in part to the actor's dedication whose presence can be felt in every scene. Even in ones where he isn't present.
The movie brilliantly uses a wide variety of colours and realistic spaces to portray the claustrophobia that surrounds us in our daily lives to present its horror story.
Amidst it all, Phoenix's Joker stands out, elevating the film way higher than just another superhero flick.
Finally, Joaquin Phoenix gives his performnce of lifetime for Joker movie.
