Super Deluxe Story:
After almost a decade, Aaranya Kaandam director Thiagarajan Kumararaja is back with Super Deluxe. there has been a positive buzz surrounding the film for several years now. Super Deluxe is a film about a bunch of eccentric characters and their ideologies.
Shilpa (Vijay Sethupathi) returns to hometown to his wife and son. But, the difference is that he is not a man anymore, he's turned himself into a woman. Vaembu (Samantha) and Mugil (Fahadh Faasil) are married but their relationship has hit a sour patch. They're trying to hide a body. Leela (Ramya Krishnan) and Arpudham aka Dhanasekar (Mysskin) are married but separated because of the differences.
A bunch of four hormonal boys get into trouble while trying to watch a porn movie. These eccentric set of characters are put together in a quirky film that teaches us life lessons and how flawed society is.
Super Deluxe Performances:
Vijay Sethupathi as Shipa is flawless. From his looks to body language and voice modulation, he has literally lived the role of Shilpa. Particularly in emotional scenes, Sethupathi has made us cry along with him.
It is safe to say that Vaembu is Samantha's best role in her career. She essayed the role of a complex character who is also a cheating wife. But, she is unapologetic and makes us sympathise with him.
Fahadh Faasil as a struggling actor has his ambitions in place. He is effortless and his expressions are on point.
Ramya Krishnan as a doting mom and a porn star can call this as one of the best roles till date in her career. She cries her heart out and brings out her ideologies on god in the most believable manner.
Mysskin in his limited screentime plays a believer of god. But, he has his own doubts and his eyes speak a lot in this quirky film.
Gayathrie and baby Ashwanth have delivered their best ever performance. Especially, Ashwanth's innocence and his camaraderie with Shilpa comes across as a refreshing tale.
Super Deluxe Positives:
Thiagarajan Kumararaja's understanding of cinema is way different from that of other filmmakers in the industry. His thoughts are pure, different yet practical and he has seamlessly included all that in the script.
The social commentary in Super Deluxe is what makes the film stand out from the rest. From politics to discrimination to bullying, everything has been addressed in the most subtle manner.
The clever use of 80s songs, the patters, everything scream of classic Thiagarajan Kumararaja. It looks like these are the trademarks of the director which was visible in Aaranya Kaandam as well.
Cinematographer PS Vinod and Nirav Shah's work deserves a special mention. Every single frame is picture perfect and can be made into a wallpaper. The use of colours and frame-in-frame composition have been used cleverly to indicate the mood and complexity in the character.
Super Deluxe Negatives:
With an explosive first half, the second half seems a bit slow and dragging. There are a few unwanted scenes that take the film close to three hours.
Super Deluxe Verdict:
Super Deluxe is a path-breaking film in Indian cinema that should be watched multiple times. It has broken all the stereotypes in filmmaking, editing and ideas as well.
