Ruler Movie Review: Balakrishna's film is a stale commercial entertainer
Aravind Peesapati

Updated: December 20, 2019 16:58 IST

Rating : 2/5

Ruler Movie Story:

Arjun Prasad (Nandamuri Balakrishna) is a rich kid born to multimillionaire Sarojini Naidu (Jayasudha). He has great leadership skills and heads the company with much success. Arjun had to travel to Uttar Pradesh for work, but his mother is dead against his decision due to unknown reasons.

When Arjun reaches Uttar Pradesh, the villagers see him and start calling him Dharma. The rest of the story explores the story of who Dharma is and how is he related to Arjun Prasad and the villagers.

Ruler Movie Performance:

Balakrishna appears in two different roles and this time the makers have taken the extra effort to make the two characters different from one another, look-wise and body language-wise. Balakrishna plays a role he has played million times before and except for the wig and styling, there is nothing much to complain.

Bhumika Chawla has a little screentime yet manages to make an impact in such a short span of time. Her expressions suited her character and it has worked to her favor.

Both Sonal Chauhan and Vedhika doesn't have any scope to perform. It is also clear that they are in the film just to please the male gaze and show off their skin to the audience.

Prakash Raj appears in an important role and with such experience, this is just a cakewalk for him. He played his role with much ease.

Ruler Movie Positives:

Balakrishna aka Balayya is the soul of Ruler as he puts his best foot forward even at this age. He takes maximum effort to transform himself to show major differences between the two characters.

The first half of the Ruler movie has a decent setting for a commercial entertainer. Director KS Ravikumar's experience comes in handy as he sets up the tone for a power-packed second half.

One of the strongest points of the Ruler is its cleverly choreographed fight sequences.

Another positive aspect of the Ruler is dance choreography. It's creative and will serve as a fun thing to watch along with friends.

Ruler Movie Negatives:

With Jai Simha, KS Ravikumar had crafted a proper commercial outing even though it had a cliched story. However, with the Ruler, the director has done a poor job with the story which is so stale.

KS Ravikumar is a senior director and his films usually have a strong villain characterization. But, in Ruler, the characterization of the antagonist is so weak which makes the proceedings uninteresting.

Composer Chirantan Bhatt who had scored memorable numbers in Jai Simha has done shoddy work in Ruler. The songs are hardly hummable and the background songs are too generic.

Ruler Movie Verdict:

Ruler, directed by KS Ravikumar, fails to entertain the audience as it doesn't have an impressive story that is enough to hold everyone's attention. Even with Balakrishna’s energetic performance, the film doesn't have enough substance.
