Simmba Story and Overview

It is a well-known fact that Simmba is the remake of NTR’s 2015 Telugu hit Temper, in which he played a corrupt cop who turns over a new leaf after a key incident. The film was well received and was a comeback film for NTR. Ranveer Singh takes on the lead role in the remake; he is someone who is already at the peak of his powers after the phenomenal success of Padmaavat earlier in the year. It’s still a test for the young superstar to be convincing in an all-out mass avatar. Boy, he most certainly is convincing.

Simmba also has Ajay Devgn in a cameo, reprising his celebrated Singham character. Ajay also serves as the film's voiceover narrator in the beginning. There is another huge superstar-driven surprise at the end of the film; don’t leave the theater in a hurry. All this makes Simmba more than worth its ticket rate. Wish Rohit Shetty makes a full-fledged cop film with Singham and Simmba; seeing the senior and his protege take on the baddies will be a lip-smacking prospect for the masses. Ranveer Singh’s typically OTT comedy antics keep the first half intact. His dream run shall continue with Simmba. Sara Ali Khan (welcomed with the crowd’s whistles for her entry) is undeniably pretty and her character is integrated into the core plot to an extent. The chartbuster ‘Aankh Marey’ dance track is her best moment in the film. Ashutosh Rana (played by actor Posani in Temper) and Siddhartha Jadhav get good parts as Simmba’s fellow cops in the force. The tense angle between Ranveer and Ashutosh works out really well and matches Temper’s level. Sonu Sood is the typical baddie yet again. The film also has fresh female actors deliver confident performances in a few key scenes. The comedy dialogues by Farhad Samji hit all the right notes and will bring a smile in you due to their rhyming nature. The background score is quite a power packed for the action scenes and mass moments. Thaman has delivered a typically punchy theme which takes pride of place in the background score. As with all Rohit Shetty films, the cinematography, production design, and visual treatment are colorful and glossy. The action choreography is extravagant and centered on the macho hero. The melodrama peaks in the second half and these scenes may test your patience if you have already seen Temper. There are quite a few modifications done to the original screenplay. Vakkantham Vamsi’s core story has been given a different spin by Rohit Shetty and his screenplay writers. Towards the climax of Temper, NTR turned himself into the law as the evidence to expose the rapists. He then goes about vanquishing them inside the jail. That angle has been changed completely here, as Rohit Shetty seemed particular about bringing Singham into the story. The characterisation of Simmba is also not as ruthless as Daya in Temper; he is far moving loveable and inclined towards people and family. Simmba will work well with the majority of the North Indian audience who wouldn’t have seen Temper. It has a rock solid Ranveer Singh driving the in-form Rohit Shetty’s cop story ahead to the finish line with minimal hiccups.

Simmba Verdict:

A remake done well. Simmba ought to click big time with the masses.
